Do you have frequent migraines or tension-type headaches?
If you fit in one of these groups, you may be interested in participating in a high-tech, online study exploring the connection between headaches and physiological data collected from a wrist-worn device.
Migraine headaches are a recurring type of headache. They cause moderate to severe pain, that is described as throbbing or pulsing, often on one side of the head. Nausea, weakness, and sensitivity to light and sound can also accompany migraine headaches.
250 people with frequent migraine headaches
Tension-type headaches are the most common type of headache. Tension-type headaches involve discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck and are often associated with muscle tightness in these areas. Nausea, weakness, and sensitivity to light and sound do not accompany tension-type headaches.
50 people with frequent tension-type headaches
You will receive up to $240 in Visa or Mastercard giftcards for your participation in the study. The longer you participate in the study, up to 90 days total, the more money you’ll receive.
To receive the entire $240, you will need to:
- Enroll in the study
- Complete all 3 monthly surveys
- Complete more than 79% of the daily questionnaires
- Wear the charged Embrace2 device more than 68% of the time
- Return the Embrace2
To find out more about compensation, please see the Frequently Asked Questions section.
In addition to receiving up to $240 in Visa or Mastercard giftcards, you’ll get to be a part of a high-tech, online study. In the study, you’ll wear the state-of-the-art Embrace2 sensor, which automatically tracks things like your steps, sleep activity, and skin temperature. This data is then sent to a smartphone app. This information may provide you with insight into your body and maybe even your headaches. Your participation will give researchers a better understanding of migraine and tension-type headaches, possibly leading to new treatments in the future.

The main goal of this study is to use physiological data collected by the Embrace2 device to determine whether someone experienced a migraine headache on a specific day. Researchers are hoping to better understand the relationship between physiological data, and migraine and tension-type headaches.
We expect 300 people to take part in the study.
- 250 people who experience frequent migraine headaches
- 50 people who experience frequent tension-type headaches
The Embrace2 device is a prescription only, wrist-worn biosensor that automatically collects information about your physical activity, motion, skin temperature, and other things. The Embrace2 device uses Bluetooth to send the collected data to the Mate app. From here, the information is sent from the Mate app to Empatica’s cloud where it can be analyzed by researchers.
The Embrace2 wearable device will collect:
- Physical activity (steps, movement intensity, rest)
- Sleep duration and awake time
- Skin temperature
- Electrodermal Activity, which refers to electrical changes measured on the surface of the skin, that happen when the skin receives nerve signals from the brain
The questionnaires and surveys on the ProofPilot website will collect information about:
- Demographic information like gender, education level, etc.
- Medical history including other diseases or conditions
- Migraine and tension-type headache history and characteristics
- Current medications you are taking
- Quality of life
- Lifestyle information including diet, exercise frequency, sleep habits, etc.
- Overall experience with the study
- Mood and stress levels
- How you are feeling overall
- Headache information including
- Presence of headaches
- Start and end time
- Relief medication dosage
- Location data
- Zip code-based weather and air data
ProofPilot is the website that we are using to conduct this study. It can be accessed using your smartphone or computer. ProofPilot allows our researchers to communicate with, send reminders to, and collect data from study participants. If you choose to participate in this study, you will use the ProofPilot website to engage in a variety of study-related activities, like:
- Answering questions to see if you qualify
- Reading and signing the informed consent document, which describes the study in detail before you participate
- Completing daily questionnaires and monthly surveys
- Getting paid for your participation
- Receiving reminders and notifications for study tasks and compensation
You will be provided a phone number for the Study Support Center if you need help related to your study participation. As always, if you have a medical emergency you will need to dial 911. Study staff cannot provide any immediate medical assistance.
The Embrace2 device will be provided to you at no cost. However, ProofPilot and the Empatica Mate App (Mate) may use your smartphone’s data plan. You will be responsible for any data charges. However, all study-related data can be transmitted using Wi-Fi. You can decide to use the apps only on Wi-Fi by managing the apps’ settings. This will prevent the apps from using data from your data plan.
You will receive up to $240 for completing study activities. The total amount you receive will depend on the study activities you complete. You will only be paid for the study activities you complete, and you must return your Embrace2 device to get your final compensation. Refer to the table below to see how much you will be paid for each study activity.
Your payment will be in the form of two Visa or Mastercard giftcards. The first giftcard for $50 will be available when you complete enrollment by setting up your Embrace2 device. The second giftcard for up to $190 will be available when you complete the study and return the Embrace2 device.

Upon redeeming a giftcard in ProofPilot, you will be taken to a giftcard provider to collect it. You’ll provide your name, address, phone number, and email to the giftcard provider for card activation. The giftcard provider will email you with a link and activation code. Click the link and enter your activation code to receive a giftcard number. You’ll need to write down this number to use your giftcard.
